IFS Therapy in Sydney
If you are looking for an IFS therapist in Sydney, training level matters. I am a Level 2 trained IFS therapist, PACFA-registered clinical counsellor, and one of a small number of practitioners in Sydney working with Internal Family Systems as my sole therapeutic modality. I have been in practice for seven years, seeing clients in person at my North Sydney office and online for clients across Australia.
IFS is not one tool in a broader toolkit for me. It is the foundation of everything I do. That focus, combined with Level 2 training, means the work tends to go deeper and move with more precision than a more general approach allows. For a deeper explanation of the IFS model, visit the Internal Family Systems therapy page.
What Is IFS Therapy?
Internal Family Systems therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach developed by Dr Richard Schwartz. It understands the mind as a system of distinct parts, each with its own perspective, emotional tone, and protective role. Some parts carry unresolved pain from difficult experiences. Others developed strategies to protect those wounded parts from being overwhelmed. When the system is under stress, these protective strategies often show up as patterns that feel hard to change, including anxiety, self-criticism, emotional reactivity, numbness, or difficulty in relationships.
At the centre of the IFS model is the Self, a quality of awareness available to every person that is naturally calm, curious, compassionate, and capable of leading the healing process. Therapy works to restore the connection between the Self and the parts that have been managing everything alone. When that connection strengthens, the parts that have been working hardest begin to trust that they do not have to. That is when lasting change becomes possible.
In short, IFS is not about managing symptoms. It is about healing the inner system that produces them..
Why Training Level Matters
Not all IFS therapists have the same depth of training. The IFS Institute, the official training body founded by Dr Richard Schwartz, offers three levels of training for practitioners. Level 1 covers the foundations of the model. Level 2, which I completed in 2019, involves significantly more advanced clinical work, including supervised practice with complex presentations and a deeper understanding of how the model applies to trauma, relational dynamics, and stuck internal systems.
Most IFS therapists currently practising in Sydney have completed Level 1 training. I am one of the few Sydney-based solo practitioners to hold Level 2 certification, verified on the IFS Institute practitioner directory at ifs-institute.com/practitioners/all/175657. This is not a minor distinction. It affects how complex presentations are held, how deeply the model is applied, and what becomes possible over the course of therapy.
What IFS Therapy in Sydney Can Help With
People seek IFS therapy in Sydney for many different reasons. Some are working with the lasting effects of trauma, including difficult early experiences, overwhelming events, or the accumulated weight of years of self-criticism and shame. Others are navigating relationship patterns that repeat despite their best intentions, finding that closeness tends to trigger defensive reactions they cannot seem to change. Some are facing a period of transition or confusion about life direction, sensing that something important is not aligned but unable to access what it is.
IFS is also effective for anxiety, depression, addiction, and the kind of persistent low-level unhappiness that does not have a specific name. Because the model works with the underlying parts driving these experiences rather than addressing symptoms on the surface, it tends to create meaningful change across a wide range of presentations.
This is individual therapy, not couples therapy. I work with adults only, in person in North Sydney and online across Australia. In short, if something in your inner world is making your outer life harder, IFS is likely relevant.
In-Person and Online IFS Therapy in Sydney
My North Sydney office is at 3/188 Pacific Highway, a five-minute walk from Victoria Cross station and across the road from The Union Hotel. Street parking is available on McHatten Street and Crows Nest Road. The consulting room looks out onto a garden, which many clients find helps with the quality of internal focus that IFS work requires.
In-person sessions are available for clients across the greater Sydney area, including the CBD, inner suburbs, northern beaches, and further afield. Clients travel regularly from Mosman, Cremorne, Neutral Bay, and across greater Sydney including the Sutherland Shire for in-person sessions. If travelling is not practical, online sessions are available to anyone in Australia via Zoom, with no reduction in the quality or depth of the work.
Both in-person and online sessions are covered by health fund rebates. In short, wherever you are based in Sydney or across Australia, I can work with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
The questions below address what people most commonly ask before starting IFS therapy in Sydney.
What is IFS therapy in Sydney?
IFS therapy is a structured, evidence-based approach that understands the mind as a system of parts, each with its own role and protective function. In Sydney, IFS is offered by a small number of practitioners with varying levels of training. My practice is based in North Sydney and offers both in-person sessions and online sessions for clients across Australia.
What is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 IFS training?
The IFS Institute trains practitioners across three levels. Level 1 covers the foundational model. Level 2 involves advanced supervised clinical training with more complex presentations, trauma, and relational dynamics. Most IFS therapists currently practising in Sydney hold Level 1 certification. I completed Level 2 training in 2019 and am verified on the IFS Institute practitioner directory.
How much does IFS therapy cost in Sydney and are health fund rebates available?
Online sessions are $170 and in-person sessions at my North Sydney office are $210. All sessions are 90 minutes. Health fund rebates are available through Bupa, Medibank, HCF, ahm, and ARHG. No GP referral is required.
Can I do IFS therapy online rather than coming to North Sydney?
Yes. Online sessions are available to anyone in Australia via Zoom. The quality and depth of IFS therapy translates well to online delivery and many clients prefer it. Online sessions are $170 for 90 minutes with the same health fund rebates available as in-person sessions.
Is IFS therapy effective for anxiety, depression, and trauma?
Yes. IFS is used extensively with anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, and relationship difficulties. Because it works with the parts driving these experiences rather than managing symptoms directly, the changes it produces tend to be lasting. I work with all of these presentations in my North Sydney practice.
Where is your Sydney IFS therapy practice located?
My practice is at 3/188 Pacific Highway, North Sydney, NSW 2060. The office is a five-minute walk from Victoria Cross station and across the road from The Union Hotel. Street parking is available on McHatten Street and Crows Nest Road.
