IFS Therapy Fees in Sydney
Transparent pricing is important. No one should have to enquire just to find out whether therapy is financially accessible for them. Below is everything you need to know about session fees, health fund rebates, and the free intro call before booking.
Session Fees
Sessions are 90 minutes in length. This is consistent for both in-person and online appointments.
Online sessions are $170. In-person sessions at my North Sydney office at 3/188 Pacific Highway are $210. The difference reflects the cost of maintaining a consulting room. The quality, length, and structure of sessions are identical across both formats.
Health Fund Rebates
Private health fund rebates are available for sessions with a PACFA-registered counsellor. I am registered with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA registration number 16179), which is the recognised professional body for counsellors and psychotherapists in Australia.
Rebates are available through the following funds: Bupa, Medibank, HCF, ahm, and ARHG. If your health fund is not on this list, it is worth contacting them directly to ask whether they cover sessions with a PACFA-registered counsellor, as fund policies do change.
Rebate amounts vary by fund and by your level of extras cover. Your fund can confirm the exact amount you are entitled to before your first session. To claim, you will need a receipt confirming the date, amount paid, and my PACFA registration number.
No GP referral is required to access health fund rebates. You can book directly and claim through your fund in the same way you would for a dental or optical appointment. In short, health fund rebates are straightforward to access and require no referral or pre-approval.
Medicare and the Mental Health Treatment Plan
Medicare rebates for therapy, accessed through a Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP, apply to sessions with AHPRA-registered psychologists. PACFA-registered counsellors are not eligible for Medicare rebates under this scheme.
This is a common source of confusion and worth being direct about. If you are hoping to use a Mental Health Treatment Plan for sessions with me, this is not possible. What is available instead are private health fund rebates through the funds listed above, which do not require a GP referral or a mental health plan.
If you already have an active Mental Health Treatment Plan and are seeing a psychologist alongside working with me, these two things can coexist. Many clients work with more than one practitioner at the same time for different purposes. In short, Medicare does not cover these sessions, but private health fund rebates do not require a referral or a plan and are available to anyone with relevant extras cover.
What the 90-Minute Session Length Means
Most therapy sessions in Australia are 50 to 60 minutes. IFS sessions are 90 minutes, and this is not incidental. The IFS model requires time to slow down, build internal awareness, and work with whatever arises without rushing toward a conclusion. The extended length is part of what makes the work effective, not an add-on.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does IFS therapy cost in Sydney?
Online sessions are $170 and in-person sessions at my North Sydney office are $210. All sessions are 90 minutes. Health fund rebates are available through Bupa, Medibank, HCF, ahm, and ARHG, reducing the out-of-pocket cost depending on your level of cover.
Which health funds cover IFS therapy in Australia?
Bupa, Medibank, HCF, ahm, and ARHG all provide rebates for sessions with a PACFA-registered counsellor. If your fund is not listed, contact them directly to ask about cover for PACFA-registered practitioners. Rebate amounts vary by fund and by your level of extras cover.
Can I use Medicare for IFS therapy?
No. Medicare rebates through the Mental Health Treatment Plan apply to AHPRA-registered psychologists only. PACFA-registered counsellors are not eligible. Private health fund rebates are available instead and do not require a GP referral or mental health plan.
Do I need a GP referral to access health fund rebates?
No. Health fund rebates for sessions with a PACFA-registered counsellor do not require a referral. You can book directly and claim through your fund using a receipt with the date, amount paid, and PACFA registration number.
Is there a gap fee after health fund rebates?
Yes, in most cases. The rebate from your fund will reduce but not fully cover the session fee. Your fund can confirm the exact rebate amount before your first session so you know what the out-of-pocket cost will be.
What does the free intro call involve?
It is a 15-minute conversation by phone or video where you can share what you are looking for, ask questions about the approach or fees, and get a sense of whether this feels like a good fit. There is no obligation and no charge.
